MOTS-C (Mitochondrial-Derived Peptide)
Mitochondrial Peptide • 16 Amino Acids
CAS: 1627580-64-6
MOTS-C is a 16-amino acid mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) encoded within the 12S rRNA gene of the mitochondrial genome -- one of the first mitochondrial-encoded signaling peptides identified. Its primary mechanism involves activation of the AMPK pathway, a master regulator of cellular energy homeostasis, leading to enhanced glucose uptake and fatty acid oxidation. MOTS-C represents a novel class of retrograde mitochondrial-nuclear signaling molecules with broad metabolic research applications.
Key Research Findings:
- Rodent studies demonstrated 30-40% improvement in exercise capacity (treadmill endurance) following MOTS-C administration
- Diet-induced obesity models showed significant resistance to weight gain and improved glucose tolerance with daily dosing protocols
- In vitro AMPK activation assays confirmed 2-3 fold increases in phospho-AMPK levels at micromolar concentrations
- Insulin sensitivity studies in aged mice showed restoration of glucose disposal rates to near-young-control levels following 14-day treatment
